The Wet Hair Rulebook

Let’s talk about something most people completely underestimate: just how fragile your hair actually is, especially when it’s wet.  Here’s the truth: healthy hair isn’t just about what you use, it’s about how you use it.

Start Before You Even Get Your Hair Wet

One of the biggest mistakes? Getting your hair wet before detangling.

Hair is at its most fragile when wet. The structure swells, the cuticle lifts slightly, and strands stretch more easily, making them far more prone to snapping.

Best practice:  Always detangle gently before stepping into the shower. Think of it as prepping your hair, not fighting it later. The Belle Brush - The Original is great for this.

Damp Hair > Soaking Wet Hair

When it comes to treatments and masks, more water is not better.

If your hair is dripping wet, the excess water can dilute your product, meaning your hair won’t absorb all those nourishing ingredients properly.

What to do instead:  After washing, gently squeeze or wring out excess water so your hair is damp, not soaking. This allows your mask or treatment to actually do its job.

Timing Matters More Than You Think

And just as important, leave your mask or treatment on for the recommended time. That timing isn’t random.

Hair treatments are formulated to work over a specific window, allowing the ingredients to properly penetrate the hair, smooth the cuticle, and deliver real results. Rinsing too early cuts that process short, meaning you’re not getting the full benefit of the product. On the flip side, leaving it on far longer than advised doesn’t necessarily improve results and can sometimes lead to heaviness or buildup.

Trust the timing, it’s part of the formula.

Sectioning Is Non-Negotiable

We get it, you're in a rush. But throwing product on your hair in one go leads to uneven coverage, wasted product, and patchy results.

Pro tip:  Work in sections. It ensures every strand gets the attention it deserves, from root to ends.

The Right Brush Changes Everything

When your hair is wet, technique matters, but so do tools.

Using the wrong brush can cause unnecessary tension and breakage. That’s where a treatment-specific brush comes in.

The Treatment Brush is designed with flexible rubber teeth that glide through the hair, helping to evenly distribute product and minimise pulling and snapping, meaning that no strand is left behind.

Don’t Leave Your Hair Wet for Too Long

Here’s something not enough people talk about: leaving your hair wet for extended periods can actually damage it.

When hair stays wet, it repeatedly swells and contracts, a process known as hygral fatigue. Over time, this weakens the hair shaft, leading to increased breakage, frizz, and a rough texture.

Translation:  Letting your hair air dry occasionally is fine, but doing it all the time isn’t doing your hair any favours.  Whenever possible, gently dry your hair rather than leaving it wet for hours.

And Please, Never Sleep with Wet Hair

We can’t stress this enough.

Going to bed with wet hair creates the perfect storm for damage:

  • Hair is stretched and fragile
  • Friction from your pillow causes breakage
  • The scalp stays damp, which can disrupt its natural balance

You wake up with tangles, frizz, and weakened strands, and over time, that damage builds.

The rule:  Dry it before bed. Always.

At the end of the day, strong, healthy hair comes down to consistency and care. It’s the small, intentional habits, being gentle, taking your time, using the right tools, and respecting what your hair actually needs that make the biggest difference over time. Treat your hair like something worth protecting, especially when it’s wet, and you’ll start to see the payoff in how it looks, feels, and holds onto its strength.
